The Lock: Federal 720B
This lock, seemingly intended for the UK market, comes with a range of security features:
- Patented Clever Shackle Design – Uses a button mechanism to release the shackle rather than a traditional screw.
- Ball Bearing Locking Mechanism – Provides extra resistance against shimming.
- Anti-Drill Sliding Cover Plate – Designed to prevent easy drilling attacks.
- Six-Pin Brass Cylinder – Featuring mushroom pins, anti-bump, and anti-drill pins to resist picking attempts.
- Solid Brass Body with Molybdenum Shackle – A strong, durable build meant to withstand cutting and brute force attacks.
The Pick: 57 Seconds to Defeat
Despite its strong marketing claims, LockPickingLawyer was able to pick the lock in just 57 seconds (1:26 to 2:23 in the video). He used a 50,000th-inch tensioner and a short hook pick from the Apex line—available at Covert Instruments—to manipulate the pins. While the lock did contain security features like spools and a bump-resistant pin, it ultimately didn’t hold up against an experienced picker.
Gut Analysis: What’s Inside?
After picking the lock, LockPickingLawyer disassembled it to examine its internal components. Some key observations:
- Anti-Drill Pins: Two hardened steel pins protect the core from drilling.
- Serrated Key Pins: Found in slots 1, 2, 5, and 6 to make picking more difficult.
- Spool Pins: Present in four slots, increasing pick resistance by creating false sets.
- Bump-Resistant Pin & Heavy Spring: In slot 3, likely designed to prevent bump key attacks.
- Counter-Milling on the Core: Adds another layer of resistance by causing pins to catch during manipulation.
While the lock offers solid resistance to brute force and low-skill attacks, it ultimately couldn’t stop an experienced picker for long.
Final Thoughts
For those looking for a mid-tier security padlock, the Federal 720B does a decent job of resisting common attacks like raking and bumping. However, as LockPickingLawyer demonstrated, it’s no match for a skilled picker. If you’re interested in this lock, you can check it out on Amazon.
