When it comes to security, most people trust well-known brands like Master Lock to keep their valuables safe. However, as LockPickingLawyer recently demonstrated in his latest video, even some of the most secure-looking locks can be compromised in mere seconds using an old technique called comb picking.

A Century-Old Flaw in Modern Locks

In the video, LockPickingLawyer examines ten puck locks from Master Lock and American Lock, a subsidiary of Master Lock for over 17 years. These locks are marketed as high-security options, featuring hidden shackle designs to prevent brute force attacks and cores filled with security pins. Despite these features, he successfully picks all ten locks in seconds using a technique that has been around for nearly 100 years.

Comb picking takes advantage of an inherent design flaw where there is excessive space above the shear line in the lock. This allows an attacker to lift both the key pins and driver pins above the shear line, enabling the plug to turn freely and unlocking the device almost instantly.

Why Is This Just Coming to Light?

One might wonder why this vulnerability hasn’t been widely discussed before. The reason is that most commercially available comb picks were traditionally too thick (32 thousandths of an inch) to fit into these keyways. However, that has changed. LockPickingLawyer’s company, Covert Instruments, now offers a new comb pick set in 25 and 15 thousandths of an inch thickness, making it possible to exploit this flaw in locks that were previously resistant.

Final Thoughts

LockPickingLawyer’s video serves as an eye-opening reminder that not all locks provide the level of security they claim. If you rely on these puck locks, it may be time to reconsider your security measures and look for alternatives that do not suffer from this well-known flaw. Stay informed and always evaluate your security hardware carefully!
